Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. Think big. - Daniel Burnham, Chicago architect. (1846-1912)

If you bring forth what is within you,
what you bring forth will save you.

If you do not bring forth what is within you,
what you do not have within you will destroy you.

- Gospel of Thomas

The trick is to catch them at school — before they become generals and senators and presidents — and poison their minds with humanity. - Kurt Vonnegut

You can’t apologize your way into people’s hearts. You have to go full force. - St. Vincent

Distilling is beautiful. First of all, because it is a slow, philosophic, and silent occupation, which keeps you busy but gives you time to think of other things, somewhat like riding a bike. Then, because it involves a metamorphosis from liquid to vapor (invisible), and from this once again to liquid; but in this double journey, up and down, purity is attained, an ambiguous and fascinating condition, which starts with chemistry and goes very far. - Primo Levi, “The Periodic Table”

The purpose of thinking about the future is not to predict it but to raise people’s hopes. - Dyson

I’m glad I walk/bike most of the time, but I don’t see a subway train on here, as AMTRAK is most definitely not the same type of rail system.

This also confirms my POV that cruise ships are pointless and wasterful.

Why I am not going to buy a computer or Standards for Technological Innovation

To make myself as plain as I can, I should give my standards for technological innovation in my own work. They are as follows:-

1. The new tool should be cheaper than the one it replaces.
2. It should be at least as small in scale as the one it replaces.
3. It should do work that is clearly and demonstrably better than the one it replaces.
4. It should use less energy than the one it replaces.
5. If possible, it should use some form of solar energy, such as that of the body.
6. It should be repairable by a person of ordinary intelligence, provided that he or she has the necessary tools.
7. It should be purchasable and repairable as near to home as possible.
8. It should come from a small, privately owned shop or store that will take it back for maintenance and repair.
9. It should not replace or disrupt anything good that already exists, and this includes family and community relationships.

From the 1987 Essay “Why I am NOT going to buy a computer” by Wendell Berry.

Not sure if I agree with his original essay, but the 9 reasons are up to snuff.

The Pursuit of Happiness

From Dive into Mark:

1. Stop buying stuff you don’t need
2. Pay off all your credit cards
3. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in your house/apartment (storage lockers, etc.)
4. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit on the first floor of your house (attic, garage, etc.)
5. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in one room of your house
6. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in a suitcase
7. Get rid of all the stuff that doesn’t fit in a backpack
9. Get rid of the backpack

I’m mostly at Step 5.
